The town of Hampi is built on the ruins of Vijayanagara, one of the most significant and richest empires in the Indian history. It's history can also be traced in the RAMAYANA. Situated near the modern city of Hospete, it is spread across 4100 acres and is home to one of the holiest temples in India, the Virupaksha temple. As told by a local guide, one needs approximately 3 months or more to learn the entire history of the group of monuments present in the region.
