A day at Shilpgram, Udaipur.

Having visited the markets, beautiful lakes, and an architectural wonder, The City Palace, our next stop was Shilpgram. Shilpgram or Shilpon ka gram is a rural arts and crafts complex outside the city, surrounded by the Aravali range. It was basically established with the objective of educating people about the culture prevalent in Rajasthan, as well as life of the people living in that region.

If you really want to indulge in the tribal vibe and experience different shades of Rajasthan all at once, Shilpgram is where you should be headed. And not only that, the place has people representing handicrafts of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, and Orissa as well.

Attractions of the place

1. Enjoy the cultural music and dance performances by local artists. Bhavai dance, involving women balancing brass pitchers; swaying with their soles on the edge of a glass, Ghoomar dance, performed during auspicious occasions, Kalbeliya dance, snake charmer dance, and folk songs of heroic deeds and love stories, accompanied by dholak, tabla and sarang are the main attractions of the place.

2. If you have no time to roam around the streets and markets of Udaipur, you can shop for traditional dresses, shoes, and bags at Shilpgram. But there isn't much to choose from. Bargaining is the key.

3. For all the girls out there, you can get nail art and heena done, dress up in traditional outfits followed by a quick photoshoot. Also, there are small shacks with people performing magic tricks and puppet shows.

4. Okay, so I might look funny, but the camel ride was actually fun.

Also, the best time to visit Shilpgram is during the Shilpgram Mela held annually in the month of December. Artisans from all over the country gather and display their products. Workshops are organised for people looking to master a particular art.

Pro tips :
  • Do not forget to carry your sunglasses.
  • Avoid using the washrooms as the sight is unbearable.
  • The food inside Shilpgram is not worth the money.
  • If you are a student, do carry your identification proof for a discount on the entry fee.
  • If you're going in summers, keep yourself hydrated.
