Basics: Winter Skincare
It's everyone's dream to get that flawless dewy glow that is immune to icy cold temperatures, winter sun and harsh winds. As much as we like the cozy blankets and oh so gorgeous fall clothes, winter, in particular, can be very harmful for the skin. Lesser water intake and decreased activity of protective barriers leaves the skin dehydrated which leads to visible dry patches and irritation. Before starting, let me tell you that it takes time and commitment to achieve visible results following a particular skin care regime. Here's a step wise guide to help you attain that supple healthy skin.
1. KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE
No two people have the same skin type and it's very important to determine yours before start using a product. You can use a product (which is not suitable for your skin) for months and see no results. Using wrong products may even lead to negative effects and breakouts. Visit your dermatologist to know your skin type or do it yourself at home.

2. FINDING THE RIGHT PRODUCTS
Once you know your skin type, it's time to choose products to suit your skin. Keeping skin hydrated is very important in winters. Avoid products containing alcohol or parabenes as they tend to dehydrate the skin. Try going for products having vitamin E and C as it is no surprise that these can do wonders for your skin.
3. FOLLOWING A ROUTINE
A good skincare routine and sticking to it is more important than buying expensive products and not not using them regularly.
- CLEANSING, TONING, AND MOISTURIZING are the three basic steps that you should follow no matter what. SUNSCREEN is to be used on a regular basis even though most people choose to ignore this step in winters. Please DO NOT.
- Always carry a face mist or simple rose water and sprinkle it on your face whenever your skin feels dehydrated.
- For people in their late twenties, a good anti ageing regimen to avoid early signs of ageing is always advised.
- Before going to bed, make sure that you have no make up on and repeat the three steps; cleansing, toning, and moisturizing. You can also use a moisturizing face mask after using the toner.
- Use a lip balm and exfoliate your lips from time to time.
- Do not forget to take care of your hands and feet as they are prone to dryness as well. Use a good lotion to keep them moisturized all day long.
4 .EXFOLIATION AND PROPER DIET
Exfoliating your skin twice or thrice a week using a gentle scrub followed by a good face massage is very important to keep the dirt and impurities out. Along with that, good diet including citrus fruits, vegetables and vitamin supplements might help you achieve that flawless glow.
5. WHAT NOT TO DO
Avoid alcohol containing products.
Avoid washing your face multiple times a day.
Avoid exfoliating with nut or plastic based products. instead, go for mud or clay based gentle scrubs.
Avoid putting make up on flaky or irritated skin.
Avoid using your summer skin care products.
Avoid licking your lips.
